Sustainability is not a sprint, it is a marathon

Case

Anna Celsing, VP Group Sustainability, Head of Sustainability, Alfa Laval

“Alfa Laval is a leading global supplier of products within heat transfer, separation, and fluid handling, primarily within the energy, marine, food & water industries, covering some 100 countries. All areas crucial in tackling climate crisis. We are a component in the solution. To be trustworthy, we must be a responsible company, starting with our own operations, our own people. There is a need for a new type of leadership, new competencies, new knowledge. And for a wider understanding of how to transform an organisation from a leadership perspective. The challenges lie in facilitating the commitment from our people to engage, doing it themselves. We need both a top-down and a bottom-up approach. You must include people, first of all, to make it happen. We believe that you cannot succeed if you do not see that.

“We cannot just sit back and tell everyone else what to do. We had to start with our own operations, with our own people. The reward lies in being part of the solution.”
Anna Celsing, VP Group Sustainability, Head of Sustainability, Alfa Laval

“Also, you need to understand the mindset of sustainability and the holistic view of it to be able to drive the change. You need to acknowledge that sustainability is environmental, social and governance. Of course, there is the E, for environmental, where we as Alfa Laval can bring so much to the world. But we also believe you cannot succeed without the broad mindset; you must also think about the S (that stands for social sustainability) in ESG. Without commitment to the S in your own operations and in the value chain, like securing human rights, you are not a responsible company. Finally, we must govern things as well. I do not see how you could do anything but do all three of these things. Because they are connected. And that broad mindset is what we try to give our people.

Within sustainability, everything is happening so fast and is constantly moving. It is not a sprint, it is a marathon – and it is a marathon where the goal post is always moving further ahead and changing direction. Therefore, some of the most important aspects of our collaboration with Mannaz are openness, agility and our close relationship. Because of Mannaz’ deep understanding of our business, we can move fast enough and utilise our window of opportunity to create change.

Mannaz is working with Alfa Laval to connect the wider business to the sustainability transformation through:
1

expanded project management training

2

a sustainability & ESG programme for sustainability managers and selected professionals

3

sustainability & strategy workshops for business unit management teams

The aim is for participants to feel more confident, comfortable, and prepared to pick up the baton and drive Alfa Laval’s sustainability transformation.

Sustainability Sustainability is the decision to be part of the solution

Catering to the needs of today without compromising tomorrow is a parameter for sustainable success. Sustainability, powered by collaboration, is a skill set that embraces equality, diversity and inclusion as catalysts for change. Taking active responsibility for people & planet is no longer optional — it’s a vital skill for today and generations to come. Let’s collaborate to succeed.
